Take Part in Our Research

The Harper Lab studies how people move on stairs, and how stairway design can make that safer. Our studies depend on volunteers from the Huntsville community. Below is what we are enrolling now, what taking part involves, and how to reach us.

Now enrolling: Contrast markings on stairs

A one-hour study on how often stair edges should be marked so that older adults can see each step clearly. We are recruiting adults 65 and older, with or without contrast-sensitivity changes such as blurred or cloudy vision.

You may qualify if you

  • Are 65 years or older

  • Get around your community independently, and use stairs more than twice a week

  • Can go up and down a stairway comfortably, with rest breaks provided

This study may not be a fit if you have

  • A severe rheumatologic or orthopedic condition

  • A lower-limb injury or a recent joint replacement

What taking part involves

  • One visit to our lab on the UAH campus, about one hour in total

  • A vision test

  • The STEADI fall-risk questionnaire, which tells us whether to use a safety harness during the stair walking

  • Walking up and down a stairway in the lab, with rest breaks whenever you want them

  • A $25 Walmart gift card as our thank-you

How to sign up

Complete the stair contrast markings sign-up survey. It takes about five minutes. If you would rather sign up by phone, or you have questions before deciding, call or email the lab and we will walk you through it.
